The Latin alphabet which decorates this mug was produced in Venice in 1523 by Ludovico Vincentino, also known as Arrighi. The style of the family of alphabets to which it belongs is called Trajan, because it is based on the lettering used on monuments erected in the reign of that Roman Emperor including the famous column. Those carved Roman letters are the basis of our modern capital letters. The clarity and perfection of their design has seen it used for over two thousand years.
